Today’s defence in the media includes widespread coverage of the news that Britain will send HMS Daring to the Gulf to support the campaign against Daesh.
HMS DARING
Today’s announcement that Britain will send destroyer HMS Daring to the Gulf to support the military campaign against Daesh is widely carried across the newspapers, including in The Telegraph (p2), The Times (p18), The Mirror (p17), Daily Mail (p21), Daily Star (p9), The Independent App Edition (p10), and The Sun online. Papers report that Defence Secretary Michael Fallon will this week send the Royal Navy ship to protect US carriers being used to mount bombing campaigns in Syria and Iraq. The Telegraph also references the Defence Secretary’s recent announcement that additional UK troops would deploy to Iraq to support the multi-national military effort against Daesh.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said:
All three armed services are making a vital contribution to defeating Daesh. RAF aircraft are hitting the terrorists daily on the ground; the Army is providing counter explosives training to Iraq troops; the Royal Navy helps protect coalition carriers in the Gulf as they launch strikes.
With the biggest defence budget in Europe and the second biggest in NATO our Armed Forces are making a real difference around the world.
ARMY
There is follow up in The Telegraph (p7) that soldiers will no longer be shouted at or made to do more than 10 press-ups as a punishment.
An Army spokesperson said:
The Army has changed its culture so that the way bad behaviour is managed is regulated, this includes restrictions on when drills can be issued as penalties.
ARCTIC CONVOYS
Coverage is carried in The Scottish Sun p16 (p25), The Scotsman p17 (p3), that a new tartan honouring heroes of the World War Two Artic Convoys is to be revealed tomorrow. It’s also reported that Russia will host a ceremony for veterans who took part in the Artic Convoys.
