Defence in the Media: Monday 31 December 2018

Today’s Defence-related news includes follow-ups to an interview with Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson in yesterday’s Sunday Telegraph.

Defence after Brexit

The Defence Secretary outlined his future ambitions for Defence post-Brexit, stating in the Sunday Telegraph that “this is our biggest moment since the Second World War,” and adding “this is our moment to be a true global player.”

Follow-up reporting is carried in today’s The Times, The Independent, Daily Star, The Scotsman, on Daily Mirror online and Bloomberg online. The possibility of establishing other further operating bases outside of Europe after we leave the EU was also discussed.

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said:

For so long – literally for decades– so much of our national viewpoint has actually been coloured by a discussion about the European Union.

This is our moment to be that true global player once more – and I think the Armed Forces play a really important role as part of that.
