Appointment of Defence Secretary

The appointment of Penny Mordaunt MP as Defence Secretary is covered by all of the national newspapers and broadcasters. It is widely noted that the new Defence Secretary is a serving reservist with the Royal Navy and is the first female incumbent of the post.

The Defence Secretary, who leaves her role as Secretary of State for International Development but will continue as Women and Equalities Minister, previously served as Minister for the Armed Forces from May 2015 to July 2016 and expressed her excitement at returning to the ministry.

Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt said:

It is a huge privilege to be back at the MOD and to be asked to work with the best armed forces in the world and I’m very much looking forward to getting on with the job.
